On the Generation and Shaping Self-similar Traffic in Optical Packet-switched Networks

This paper first describes the implementation of a protocolindependent self-similar traffic generator in the OPNET modeler. With the support of this traffic generator, we investigate the traffic shaping function at the edge router in optical packet-switched networks. We propose an optical packet assembly mechanism and discuss its impacts on the traffic characteristics. Our simulation results indicate that this assembly mechanism can serve as traffic shaper to reduce the traffic correlation and the degree of self-similarity.
